Day 7, Bagan

Today was to be a blobbing day to recharge our batteries. We had a bit of a sleep in until 7am after a restless night. It was so hot and the air conditioning kept going off. When it came back on it was too cold but without it was unbearably hot. The blanket they have on our bed is like a winter duvet. No top sheet.

A brekkie of coconut soup for me and omelette for Mick filled us up for our bit walk into town. We found a wood carving place that did the most amazing carvings. It turned out to be very expensive but we had a good look. Such talent.

During our wanderings we stumbled upon a temple that dated from somewhere between the 11th and 13th century. It really had an eerie feel to it.

We went and visited another Pagoda, "the best one" according to our lovely horse and cart driver. They are all very similar. I like the old rustic ones better.

We wandered around  the town looking for a barber to cut Mick's hair but we couldn't find one. We had a beer at 10.30am because the heat then was already pretty strong (an excuse really).

This fella rode past while we were having our morning tea beer.

After wandering the town and visiting the Pagoda we found a wood carver and brought some lovely carved bottle openers from him. He used to be a monk. During the water festival he was a monk for one week. Not sure how that all works. He showed us how he does tattoos with a bamboo needle. I was a wee bit tempted but it looked quite painful.

We got a taxi back to our hotel and blobbed for bit before wandering off to a street restaurant. We got fried dragon leaf, tea leaf rice salad and a peanut and chickpea dish along with some little plates of something that was fish based. Very, very nice. Oh and of course a Myanmar Beer!

A snap from the taxi.

We wandered through the temples across from our hotel. So sad to see a couple destroyed by the earthquakes. After that we sat with our driver from yesterday and chatted about life in general. What a lovely guy he is. He lives with his mum and dad, aunty and wife. His brother has a very bad back. Sounds similar to what I've had. No ACC here or MRI let alone surgery to fix it. I'm so lucky. Our driver loves the movie Titanic. He has one horse called Jack, who we had yesterday, and one called Rose who took us around today. They are fat horses. Nothing like the other ones we saw when we arrived. He said they only do one trip a day.

A termite nest. It would come up to above my waist if I was to stand next to it. They are everywhere.

Wrecked in the 1975 earthquakes

Another victim of the 1975 quake.

We had a rest, a swim and a beer before heading out to the see the sunset with our lovely driver. It was an average sunset but we met some lovely local people. They started out trying to sell us stuff and ended up talking with us. The sunset wasn't the best but the sun changed colour the later it got. It disappeared behind a bank of cloud before it really did its thing. Was cool to see though.
This hawker has been bothering me for years. Can't seem to shake him off!

This boy wanted money but it isn't okay to give kids money or sweets so I gave him a silver fern brooch.

This guy tried to sell us paintings. We said no and ended up chatting to him for ages.

Hawkers and tourists. Bloody tourists! :)

Our driver took us back to our hotel. Today he had Rose the horse with him. Jack and Rose are named after the Titanic characters. His favourite movie. It truely was very sad saying goodbye to him. I really liked this guy. So sincere and so sweet. Could have adopted him as my fourth son easily.

Another wee blob and back next door to our favourite place. A couple of beers and tea of fried mustard leaf, chicken in lime sauce and hot and sour fried rice with chicken. Man these guys can cook.

Back "home" for an early night.
